XRP Fee vs Ethereum Gas Fee Comparison
How XRP Transaction Fees Compare to Ethereum Gas
Transaction fees are a critical consideration when choosing a blockchain for payments, DeFi, or token transfers. The XRP Ledger (XRPL) and Ethereum represent two very different approaches to fee design, and the difference in cost is dramatic.
On the XRPL, the base transaction fee is 0.00001 XRP (10 drops). At current XRP prices, this equals roughly $0.00002–0.00005 USD per transaction — essentially free for most practical purposes. This fee is fixed at a very low baseline and only increases slightly during extreme network congestion.
On Ethereum, gas fees are variable and can spike dramatically during periods of high demand. During NFT launches, DeFi surges, or market volatility events, Ethereum gas fees regularly exceed $5–$50 USD per transaction, and have occasionally spiked above $100. Average Ethereum fees hover around $1–3 USD even during normal conditions.
Why Are XRPL Fees So Much Lower?
The fee difference comes down to consensus architecture. Ethereum uses a proof-of-stake mechanism where validators compete for block rewards and transaction fees, creating upward fee pressure during high demand. The XRPL's consensus protocol does not pay validators from fees — fees are burned — so there is no economic incentive to bid up fees.
XRPL also settles transactions in 3–5 seconds, compared to Ethereum's 12-second block time (with longer effective finality). This faster throughput means less congestion and lower fees under normal conditions.
XRP vs Bitcoin Transaction Fees
Bitcoin fees are even more variable than Ethereum's. During peak periods, Bitcoin transaction fees have exceeded $50–$60 USD, driven by block size limitations and miner fee competition. For microtransactions or frequent small payments, Bitcoin is simply not cost-effective. XRPL, by contrast, processes microtransactions for fractions of a cent, making it ideal for remittances, micropayments, and high-frequency B2B settlements.
